Karen Blixen Museum

The farmhouse of the author of Out of Africa, set among coffee gardens in the Ngong foothills.

About

Karen Blixen lived in this colonial bungalow from 1917 to 1931. The museum keeps the original furniture, kitchen and verandah, and guides explain daily life on the coffee estate. The gardens look out towards the Ngong Hills.

History

Blixen's memoir Out of Africa (1937) inspired the Oscar-winning 1985 film. The house became a national museum after Kenya's independence.

Local tip

The on-site tea garden is peaceful for a late breakfast.
