Where to stay in Nairobi

Pick the area first, then the hotel. The city is compact, but every part has its own rhythm, and that shapes your trip more than the room does.

Which area suits you

Short and honest, from people who live here.

  • Nairobi CBD

    Lively

    First visit, short stay

Uhuru Park, KICC, the National Museum and City Market are close together. The busiest part of town, with the heritage Norfolk hotel nearby. Take Uber after dark.

  • Westlands

    Lively

    Restaurants, rooftop bars, nightlife

Malls, international restaurants and the city's liveliest bars. Plenty of mid-range and business hotels, and quick access to Gigiri and the CBD.

  • Karen

    Quiet

Wildlife, quiet nights, couples and families

Leafy and calm, close to the Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick orphanage and Karen Blixen Museum. Boutique hotels with big gardens; expect 45–90 minutes to the centre in traffic.

  • Kilimani

    Some noise

    Cafes, galleries, longer stays

A young, creative district with serviced apartments, coffee shops and the Yaya Centre. Great for stays of a week or more.

  • Gigiri

    Quiet

    Business trips, Karura Forest

Quiet diplomatic quarter around Village Market and the UN complex, with Karura Forest on the doorstep. Excellent for secure, calm stays.

  • Lang'ata

    Quiet

    Safari lodges, early game drives

Right beside Nairobi National Park, with lodges that offer sunrise game drives. Further from nightlife, so plan taxis for evenings.

Good to know

The small things nobody mentions until you arrive.

Guest registration
Your hotel or host records your passport details on arrival. Carry your passport or a copy with you at all times.
Taxes and fees
VAT and a service charge are often added on top of the advertised rate (up to 16% VAT and 10% service). Ask whether the price is inclusive before you book.
When to book
For the July to October migration season, December and January, and big conferences, book a month or more ahead. The rest of the year a few days is enough.
Apartments
Westlands, Kilimani and Lavington have the best serviced apartments. Check for a backup generator and a water tank; power and water can cut out briefly.

Rather have someone sort it all out?

Our team picks and books a place that fits your budget and plans. For the ride in from the airport we use Savanna Chauffeur Services.
