Before You Go: How to Prepare for a Safari Day from Nairobi
What to pack, how to pay park fees and when to leave, for Nairobi National Park and longer day trips.
Nairobi Guide Editors · 17 Oct 2026 · 1 min read

Nairobi is one of the few capitals with a national park on its doorstep, and several more are within a day's drive. A little preparation makes the day go smoothly.
What to pack
- Neutral clothes, a hat and layers, since mornings are cool and midday is hot.
- Binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent and plenty of water.
- A charged phone and a power adapter for type G sockets.
Fees and timing
Kenya Wildlife Service parks mostly take cashless payments through eCitizen or KWSPay, so arrange this in advance. Fees change, so confirm the current rate before you go.
- Leave Nairobi before 06:30 to beat traffic on the way to Naivasha or Nakuru.
- The best game viewing is early morning and late afternoon.
- For malaria advice, talk to a doctor or travel clinic before your trip.
