Riding a Matatu: Nairobi's Most Colourful Commute
Painted minibuses, loud music and flat fares: how to ride Nairobi's matatus like a local.

Matatus are privately run minibuses that connect nearly every part of Nairobi. Each has a painted theme and a sound system, and routes are shown by number on the windscreen.
How it works
- Fares are about KES 50–150 depending on distance and time of day.
- Pay the conductor (makanga) in cash or via M-Pesa when asked.
- Say "Shusha hapa" (drop me here) to get off.
